New and improved health infrastructure for Mackay region

BESIX Watpac Chief Executive Officer Mark Baker, Minister for Health, Mental Health and Ambulance Services Shannon Fentiman, Premier Steven Miles and Mackay Hospital and Health Service Chief Executive Susan Gannon turn the first sod for the construction of the $250 million Mackay Base Hospital expansion.

The delivery of health infrastructure in the Mackay Hospital and Health Service is full steam ahead with two projects reaching significant milestones.

  • $250 million Mackay Base Hospital expansion sod turn celebrated on 3 April.

The expansion is expected to be completed by the second half of 2026, and will deliver an additional 128 beds, new birth suites and women’s and children’s health units.

  • $31.5 million new Sarina Hospital was officially opened on 4 April.

The state-of-the-art facility, with an expanded emergency department, larger rooms and a new rehabilitation gym, will bring healthcare closer for people in Sarina.

The $48.5 million new Moranbah Hospital, funded by progressive coal royalties, continues construction. It is expected to be completed by late 2024.

These projects are supporting the growing demand for healthcare in the region and ensuring that the community can receive the best care, when and where they need it most.
