Construction on the Hughenden workforce accommodation site, part of the $5 billion CopperString project, got underway on 9 July.

Expected to be completed by early 2025, the site will house up to 550 construction workers as they build the 840km high voltage transmission line.

Workers staying at the Hughenden site will construct a nearby substation and progress early stages of transmission line development heading west out to Mount Isa.

Construction includes site preparation and civil works, as well as installation and maintenance of accommodation quarters over the site’s five-year life span.

CopperString, being led by Powerlink Queensland, is an almost 1000 kilometre high-voltage transmission line that will connect the mineral wealth of the north-west to the national electricity grid.

It will create the opportunity for more Queensland minerals to be processed in the state, as well as skilled jobs in new industries.

CopperString is anticipated to be complete in 2029, weather and construction conditions permitting.
