Transitioning from the QGov identity system

In early 2025, the Queensland Government will be shutting down the QGov digital identity system, and will begin using the Queensland Digital Identity (QDI) system in its place.

This means that, after transition, if you used to log in to Queensland Government online services using a QGov account, you will be using a Queensland Digital Identity (QDI) instead.

The QDI is a modern, robust and innovative system which meets the highest national standards and security protocols for digital identities.

At transition, depending on your situation, your QGov account may be converted into a QDI. In this case, the next time you try to access a Queensland Government online service, you may need to verify your identity using government-issued credentials to secure your QDI and meet the requirements of the service you are trying to access.

Checklist for your transition to QDI

  • Identify your scenario: Check the scenarios below to see which one applies to you.
  • Check your details: Where applicable, QGov and QDI details should match for a successful merge.
  • Consolidate accounts: Before the change, close QGov accounts that are no longer in use.
  • Create your QDI: Get the Digital Licence app to create your QDI.
  • Log In with QDI: Future access to Queensland Government online services that formerly used QGov will require QDI login credentials.

Understanding your transition

If you're using, or have previously used the Digital Licence app, you already have a QDI. The way your existing QGov accounts change will depend on their current setup.

  • Getting ready, before transition: Align your QGov account email with your QDI email address so that they can be merged and you can login using your QDI email address. You can do this via the QGov website. You should also ensure the other details on your account (first name, surname, date of birth) also match.
  • After transition (if you didn't take the Getting ready step above): You will have two QDIs - sign in using the QDI you will be using regularly from now on. The documents you used to secure your DLA QDI will not be able to be used again to secure a second QDI.
  • Getting ready, before transition: Close any QGov  accounts you don't need, and if you have a QDI from the DLA, verify that your email  and other details match with the QGov account that you want to continue to use.
  • After transition (if you didn’t take the Getting ready step above): Each QGov account will transition to a separate QDI. Sign in with the specific QDI email you plan to keep using.
  • Getting ready, before transition: Close any extra QGov accounts except for one account (that you want to continue to use).
  • After transition (if you didn’t take the Getting ready step above): None of your QGov accounts will have transitioned to a QDI. You'll have to create a new QDI, if you don't already have one.
  • Getting ready, before transition: Setting up a QDI via the DLA in advance is optional but recommended. If you do set up a QDI in advance via the DLA, make sure your email address, first and surname and date of birth all match with the details in your QGov account.
  • After transition (if you didn’t take the Getting ready step above): Your QGov account will turn into a new QDI. You can sign in with your QGov email and password and complete additional security verifications.

Why do I need to re-verify?

In some situations, your personal documents will need to be re-verified, as part of the process of securing your Queensland Digital Identity. This is to ensure all credentials for all Queensland Digital Identities are verified consistently, so that we can protect your private information in a safe and secure way.

Can I create a QDI now?

Yes, you can, if you have a Queensland Driver Licence, Marine Licence or Photo Identification Card. The only way to create a QDI at the moment is to download and onboard with the Queensland Digital Licence app. If you want to ensure your QGov and QDI identities are merged, ensure you use the same email address to create your new QDI, and that your personal information (first name, surname, date of birth) is correct and up to date in both identities.

Will my closed/suspended QGOV account migrate?

No – only active QGov accounts will be migrated and matched.

What happens to my QGOV data?

If you used information from government-issued credentials to verify your QGov account, this information was not stored or retained in the QGov system.

Your QDI retains only the minimum private information required to keep your identity safe and secure and complies with industry best practice standards for protecting data.

What if my credential has already been used?

Any particular credential (such as your Driver Licence) can only be used once to verify an identity to create/update a QDI. If you receive a message that your credential has been previously used, and you've downloaded and set up the Digital Licence app, it means you already have a QDI and used that credential to establish your identity and create a QDI.

You can use this QDI to access Queensland Government online services by logging in with your email address and password (which was set when you obtained the Digital Licence), and it already has the highest level of security applied.

If you get this message and you have never obtained the Digital Licence app, please contact us.
