What happens after my food safety program is accredited?

Once your food safety program has been accredited by your local council, you will need to:

  • comply with the accredited food safety program
  • keep a copy of the accredited food safety program at the food business premises and make it available to all staff
  • organise the first compliance audit within six months of your food safety program being accredited. The audit must be done by an approved food safety auditor.
  • organise regular audits based on the the frequency set by your local council.

How do I find a food safety auditor?

The Department of Health keeps a register of approved auditors. The register contains the name and contact details of the auditor, the conditions of the auditor’s approval and the term of the approval.

What happens after an audit?

Within 24 hours after a completing an audit:

  • The auditor must refer any critical non-compliances to the local council. The local council may take further action if deemed necessary.

Within 14 days after completing an audit:

  • The auditor must provide a copy of the audit report to you and your local council. The report will identify any non-compliances (i.e.: occasions where your business does not comply with the accredited food safety program or the food safety standards).
