Indigenous Languages Grants

About

Indigenous Languages Grants support the preservation, revitalisation and promotion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages across Queensland. Drawing on the knowledge and leadership of Language Owners, Elders and communities, the program supports projects that strengthen language use, documentation, sharing and intergenerational knowledge transfer.

Funding available

  • Grants of $20,000 (excluding GST) are available for eligible projects and activities.
  • All funded activities must be completed by November 2027.
  • Funding is awarded through a competitive application process.

What we are looking for

We are seeking community-led projects that preserve, revitalise, document, promote or increase the use of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages in Queensland. Projects should demonstrate clear involvement of Language Owners, Elders and community representatives, support cultural authority and Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property (ICIP), and show how language knowledge will be shared with current and future generations.

Examples of activities that may be funded

Eligible activities may include:

  • Developing and preserving Indigenous language resources and recordings.
  • Creating digital collections and repositories to safeguard language materials.
  • Increasing the visibility and everyday use of Indigenous languages.
  • Strengthening language transmission through community-led forums and workshops.

Other eligible activities may include developing language apps, dictionaries and publications, producing podcasts and videos in language, creating bilingual signage, recording oral histories and songs, and delivering training and mentoring opportunities that support language preservation and revitalisation.

These are just examples. If your idea aligns with the program objectives, we encourage you to apply.
