Peter Doherty Awards for Excellence in STEM Education

The Peter Doherty Awards for Excellence in STEM Education External website recognise students, teachers, support officers, schools and education partners (volunteers, mentors and organisations) who demonstrate an outstanding and innovative contribution to STEM education in Queensland.

The awards are named after Professor Peter Doherty, a Brisbane-born Nobel Prize-winning scientist who was educated at Indooroopilly State High School and the University of Queensland.

Nominations for 2024 are now closed

Nominations are now closed for the 2024 Peter Doherty Awards for Excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Education. This year awards will be presented across eight categories of $5000 each for individuals, education partnerships and schools.

Award categories are:

  • Outstanding Senior STEM Student Awards
  • Outstanding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Senior STEM Student Awards
  • Outstanding Rural and Remote Senior STEM Student Awards
  • Outstanding Teacher of STEM Awards
  • Outstanding Rural and Remote Teacher of STEM Awards
  • Outstanding STEM Support Officer Awards
  • Outstanding School STEM Awards
  • STEM Education Partnership Awards (partners/volunteers/mentors)

Attendance at the award ceremony

Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on Tuesday, 13 August 2024 during National Science Week (10–18 August 2024).

It is anticipated that the successful applicants will attend the awards ceremony. If required, travel and accommodation expenses will be paid by the Department of Education for the award recipients. For student awards, the travel and accommodation expenses will also be paid for 2 accompanying adults if required.

20th Anniversary puts spotlight on past winners

2023 marked the 20th year of the Peter Doherty Awards. A prestigious gala was held on Tuesday 15 August 2023 to celebrate two decades of the Awards. The gala showcased the wonderful contributions made by the many recipients during this time.
