  • all vehicle purposes of use for light vehicles – such as private, commercial, dealer, taxi.

*Vehicles that weigh under 4.5 tonnes

Vehicles not eligible for the reduction

The reduction does not apply to:

  • heavy vehicles that weigh over 4.5 tonnes*
(go to the National Transport Commission for more information on heavy vehicle registration fees)
  • recreational and commercial boats.

*Vehicle weight is either gross vehicle mass (GVM) or aggregated trailer mass (ATM).

When the 20% reduction starts

The 20% reduction applies for registrations that expire between 16 September 2024 and 15 September 2025.

Every payment you make during the 12 month period will be eligible for the reduction—it doesn’t matter whether your registration term is 1, 3, 6 or 12 months.

The reduction will start appearing on renewal notices:

  • from 5 August 2024 for 3, 6 and 12 month registrations
  • from mid-August 2024 for 1 month registrations.

How we apply the 20% reduction

If your vehicle is eligible, the 20% reduction will be applied automatically—you don’t have to do anything. The reduction will appear on your next renewal notice.

For example, from 16 September:

If you pay your registration monthly, the 20% reduction will be applied each month (for up to 12 payments).

If you pay your registration yearly, the 20% reduction will be applied to your annual renewal.

Which fees does the reduction apply to?

Fees included in the reduction

The amount you pay for your registration renewal is made up of 3 fees—the reduction applies to 2 of the fees:

Registration Fee
Traffic Improvement Fee
X Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance premium.

Fees not included in the reduction

The reduction does not apply to the Compulsory Third Party (CTP) portion of your registration.

Why? The cost of CTP premiums is controlled by the Motor Accident Insurance Commission. The CTP premiums that we collect with your registration are paid to the insurer.

The 20% reduction does not apply to:

  • number plate fees
  • dealer plate fees
  • registration transfers
  • administrative charges*.

*Examples of administrative charges that aren’t included in the reduction are charges applied when cancelling a registration, surcharges applied to terms under 12 months and late payment fees. This list is not exhaustive.

What about the registration freeze?

The registration freeze is still in place and is not affected by the registration reduction. Usually, registration fees increase each year due to indexation. The freeze means that registration fees did not increase on 1 July 2024.

The 20% reduction applies in addition to the previously announced freeze.
