Transfer a motorised mobility device registration

The transfer of a motorised mobility device is free.

If a motorised mobility device (motorised wheelchair or mobility scooter) changes hands the registration must be transferred within 14 days. There is no minimum age requirement for registration of a device.

A motorised mobility device registration can be transferred to:

  • an individual with mobility difficulties
  • an organisation where the device is to be used by the organisation's residents, shoppers, students or hirers
  • a carer (individual/organisation) where the person with mobility difficulties can't operate the motorised mobility device independently and safely, and the device is fitted with a controller allowing the carer to operate it safely.

The person in control of the motorised mobility device must be capable to safely operate the device.

Applicants must not send original copies of their evidence of identity documentation.

In person

You will need to visit a transport and motoring customer service centre or, if you live in a rural area, a QGAP office, Magistrates Court or local police station that provides vehicle registration services—please call to confirm before visiting.

Lodge a transfer of registration on behalf of someone

If you have someone lodge the transfer of registration on your behalf, your representative will need to bring their evidence of identity as well as yours.

The authorisation question will also need to be completed on the vehicle registration transfer application (F3520) by the person acting on your behalf.

Fees, charges, and compulsory third-party insurance

There are no registration, registration transfer, vehicle duty, number plate or compulsory third-party insurance fees for motorised mobility devices.

Registered motorised mobility devices are automatically covered by compulsory third-party insurance at no additional cost. This provides a benefit to the operator in case of an accident occurring similar to the users of motor vehicles on roads.

If you sell a motorised mobility device, you will need to keep a completed (by buyer and seller) Part B - vehicle registration transfer application (F3520).

If you believe the registration transfer has not been lodged by the buyer, you can submit Part B - vehicle registration transfer application (F3520) by email, post or in person.

After a motorised mobility device is transferred

You will receive:

  • a registration certificate:
    • by email if individual registered operator is signed up to receive notices by email
    • by mail if registered operator is a non-A.C.N. organisation
  • a motorised mobility device use information sheet (S5164) explaining the use of the device which includes the Queensland road rules relating to motorised mobility devices. The information sheet will be posted for applications received by email or post.

All other registered operators can get a registration certificate online.
